The general rule is age+1. So if your new arrival is three months old, she should be able to hold it for four hours. This is just a guideline though. Put your pup on a schedule and look for the signs that she has to go. This can include sniffing the ground, suddenly stopping what she was doing, or pacing. Until you can pinpoint the “I need to go” behavior, take her out frequently during the day. Especially after eating and drinking, when she wakes up from a nap, and before and after playtime. When they are puppies the hold it factor isn’t there yet. It’s more like “uh-oh gotta go…NOW”. Make sure that you are giving lots of positive re-enforcement when she goes where you want her to. My person still tells me “good potty”, which can be a bit embarrassing at the park…I am three after all.
